Heading: Bogus Scholarship Searches Swindles Millions Every Year WC: 7 words

Lead: The Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. issued a warning on Nov 21, 2019, about fraudulent scholarship searches that swindle millions of dollars from students and their families each year. WC: 31 words

Paragraph 2: According to the FTC, there are companies that promise to help students and their families find scholarships of grants in exchange for payment. However, according to the FTC, the companies may never search for scholarships or they may send the families a useless printout with scholarships the student is not even eligible for. The FTC also warned the public to not give the companies credit card, bank account or social security numbers in order to prevent their bank accounts from either being emptied or other charges being made to their accounts. WC: 91 words

Paragraph 3: In October of 2019, the FTC filed charges against 11 companies that it claims stole a total of nearly $10 million dollars from students and their families in the United States; however, despite the FTC’s best efforts in stopping these fraudulent companies, they continue to be an issue. In a manner of days, the companies can close and move to a new city or state, where they continue scamming families under a new name. “If you have to pay money to get money it might be a scam,” the FTC warns. “Be wary.” WC: 93 words

Paragraph 4: The FTC estimated that about 300,000 students and their families fall for the companies false promises every year. Al Gianelli was one of the unlucky victims of these companies when he sent $999 to Financial Aid Finders. “I worked hard for that money and they stole it,” said Al Giangelli, a high school senior in Fayetteville, Tennessee. “They’re crooks is what they are.” WC: 64 words
