Members of Lincoln County High School’s LIFT LC leadership team recently participated in the Adventure Capital Design4Good Challenge sponsored by global technology leader SAP. Adventure Capital (“AdCap”) is an innovative program that funds student led solutions motivating and empowering them to make changes in school and community health and wellness. Youth across the country had the opportunity to submit a project design and pitch for funding to bring their ideas to life.
On the day of the event, teams were virtually paired with a SAP mentor to develop an idea and prepare a 90-second Shark Tank type pitch. Teams from nine states pitched their ideas to a panel of international judges.
As part of the project, team members were given the task of interviewing students in their school about challenges they face. According to Stewart Barnes, LIFT LC Junior Representative, “When we were interviewing students and authorities in our school, the overwhelming consensus in our responses was that students are struggling to effectively manage their stress from school. Students reported that this stress often forced priority over sleep, self-care, and other necessities required to maintain wellness.”
The LIFT LC team pitched their plan to establish “De-Stress Kits” in each of the school’s classrooms so that, during free time, students can access helpful de-stressing items such as relaxing coloring pages, pamphlets on calming breathing exercise, fidget toys, etc. That afternoon winners were announced on the GENYOUth Instagram account. LIFT LC was one of the teams to receive a $1,000 grant to fund their projects.
The grant will be used to create “De-Stress Kits” for each LCHS homeroom. The goal of this project is for these kits to allow students to find meaningful rest time that will help them recharge and manage the stresses that they feel in healthy ways. The team hopes students can reduce the effects of stress and establish healthy coping strategies.
LIFT LC stands for Living in Friendship and Togetherness Lincoln County and is a student-led organization at LCHS that was created four years ago after the loss of several students in our community. The goal of LIFT LC is to create a healthy environment for the students and faculty of LCHS as well as those in our community. LIFT LC sponsors are Edie Martin and Brandi Barnes
