CM 330: Movie/Television Clip Analysis

Writer's picture: Sara LewterSara Lewter

The clip I chose for this assignment was from season 9, episode 24 of Grey’s Anatomy. In this episode, Dr. Meredith Grey goes into labor while the lights and power are out at the hospital. Meredith’s OBGYN appears in her room and tells her that she is going to need an emergency C-section. After successfully giving birth to her baby, Meredith has a medical issue arrive. While the interns are closing Meredith up from her surgery, they notice that she has blood coming through her IV. The doctors figure out that her bleeding is coming from her spleen, which was hemorrhaging. Dr. Bailey is then fetched by one of the interns to go help with Meredith. Dr. Bailey then performs a complete splenectomy during the clip I chose from Grey’s Anatomy.

From this clip, I analyzed face and eye behavior, which is known as the study of oculesics. According to Alexa at Spectra Magazine, “Oculesics is a form of nonverbal communication that derives from eye behavior.” (SeventhQueen, 2019). Also according to Alexa, oculesics is a subcategory of kinesics. (SeventhQueen, 2019). I also use the FAST method to study the nonverbal communication and emotions displayed through the eyes and eyelids of the doctors. (Richmond, 2012). According to the textbook, the Facial Affect Scoring Technique (FAST) separates the face into three sections: the lower face, the middle, and the upper face. (Richmond, 2012). With this clip, I focused on analyzing the middle section as the lower section of their face was hidden by their face masks.

In the clip, you can see when the intern tells Dr. Bailey that Meredith needs help because she is on the table. The intern is breathing heavily, like she had just run for miles. (Grey’s Anatomy, 2014). She then yells at Dr. Bailey. Dr. Bailey, realizing the seriousness of the situation, immeditalry stops what she is doing. (Grey’s Anatomy, 2014). She sits there frozen for a minute with her eyes slightly widened and cast to the right, like she was thinking. Her mouth was also slightly open. Then Dr. Bailey and another intern turn around to look at the first intern, Heather. (Grey’s Anatomy, 2014). Both of their eyes are widened and are staring at her incredulously. The clip then cuts to the scene where Dr. Bailey is in Meredith’s room. Dr. Bailey’s eyes are angled downwards and are focused on the table before her eyes switch to another doctor giving directions. Her eyes had changed from shocked to determined. She was determined to save Meredith Grey’s life. (Grey’s Anatomy, 2014).

The nonverbal communication in the clip added to my understanding of the “meaning” of the clip. The eye movements and emotions displayed through the eyes (the study of oculesics) provides context in the seriousness of the situation that is occuring in the clip. Dr. Bailey is known for keeping her cool, so in this clip when she is frozen in shock at the situation that provides context to the viewer of the seriousness of the situation. Her eye contact also shows to the viewer how serious and focused she is once in Meredith’s room. She is determined to help Meredith and keep her alive. She is no longer shaky or shocked, she is a doctor determined to do her job.
