Burnout is a psychological syndrome and it occurs to “chronic interpersonal stressors” (Maslach 2016). Overwhelming exhaustion, feelings of cynicism, and detachment from the job are all symptoms of burnout. Burnout is considered a form of “job stress” (Maslach 2016). Burnout is recognized as an “occupational hazard” (Maslach 2016) for those in professions such as those of “human services, education, and health care.” (Maslach 2016). In these occupations, employees are required to put others above themselves. This often means the employees work long hours and use all of their available energy to make others happy and well. These occupations also can lead to the employees being overloaded which causes burnout. Burnout is common in occupations where there is overload constantly and no time to rest (Maslach 2016). Employees experiencing burnout can have negative impacts on their colleagues by “disrupting job tasks” or by “causing greater personal conflict” (Maslach 2016). Burnout also impairs the quality of work performed by employees. (Maslach 2016).

For example, in this clip from the movie Two Weeks Notice, (you only need to watch from 0:01 to 0:32), Lucy, played by Sandra Bullock, is describing to her boss about how miserable and burnout she is from working with him. Her boss calls her in the middle of the night so it’s as if she never really stops working. She is so overworked that she can’t focus. Also, she describes having an ulcer and not being able to sleep do to being overworked and stressed out from the job.

Another example of burnout is shown in the two clips from the movie The Devil Wears Prada. This first clip shows Andy having to leave dinner with her father to try and find a last minute flight for her boss; however, there is a storm occurring and no planes are flying out. Andy is stressing out and looks like she is about to cry because she cannot find anyone to fly her boss back home. Throughout the movie, Miranda , the boss, is very demanding and constantly overworks her employees and stresses them out. The second clip is sort of a montage of all of the demands Miranda makes toward her employees that causes them to be overworked. This clip shows how Andy is constantly running around and is putting all of her energy into this job, and she has no time to rest.
